2020 Rarities of the World continued...

Canal Zone, Cuba, Guam, Philippines
Lot Sym. Lot Description
306 ogbl ImageCANAL ZONE, 1904, 8c on 50c Bister Brown (15). Positions 54-55/64-65, block of four, top stamps "PANAMA" 15mm long, top left stamp broken "E" of "ZONE", bottom right stamp dropped second "A" of last "PANAMA", tropicalized original gum as do all, small h.r., deep rich colors

VERY FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1904 8-CENT ON 50-CENT BISTER BROWN CANAL ZONE ISSUE, SCOTT 15. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE TOP STAMPS SHOWING THE "PANAMA" OVERPRINT 15MM LONG.

Only five panes of 100 are believed to have been issued, of which only 50 copies have with the "PANAMA" 15mm long. This is the first block we have offered since keeping computerized records. By way of comparison, the Plass collection contained three blocks of Scott 15, but none had a combination such as that offered here.

Scott Catalogue notes "On No. 15 with original gum, the gum is almost always disturbed. Unused stamps are valued thus." Scott value as block of four with no premium for the two longer "PANAMA" overprints. (Image)

307 nh ImageCANAL ZONE, 1962, 4c Thatcher Ferry Bridge, Silver (Bridge) Omitted (157a). Position 18, Mint N.H., gorgeous centering, bright and fresh

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE THATCHER FERRY BRIDGE ERROR. ONLY ONE PANE OF 50 WAS EVER ISSUED.

According to Canal Zone Stamps, one sheet, consisting of four panes of 50, was printed. Three panes were caught by postal authorities, while the fourth pane of 50 was sent to H. E. Harris & Co. as part of a larger order from the Canal Zone Philatelic Agency. At the same time this error was printed, the U.S. had issued the Dag Hammarskjold error in huge quantities. The Canal Zone authorities made plans to do the same, but were successfully sued by H. E. Harris, and the larger printing never took place. Two of the three other panes were laminated and presented to the National Postal Museum. The third was destroyed. The one pane available was broken up in 1969.

VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE CUBA 10-CENT ON 10-CENT TYPE II SPECIAL PRINTING.

In March 1900 one pane of each denomination was prepared for the Paris and Pan-American Expositions. For the 10c the Type II design was used and it is only known as a Special Printing.
