192   Image24c Steel Blue (70b). Essentially perfect centering, beautiful color in the true Steel Blue shade, well-struck large Boston "Paid" grid cancel and also red "1d" British colonial credit marking at bottom

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 24-CENT STEEL BLUE, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. A STAMP WITH WONDERFUL EYE APPEAL.

The Steel Blue is the most distinctive of all the 24c shades. Unlike some of the others, it is rarely mistaken or misidentified, and as such has always been a favorite of collectors. It is extremely rare in this superb used condition and is even more desirable with the red British handstamp.

With 1994, 1999 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $8,750.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only one other (Image)

193   Image24c Steel Blue (70b). Horizontal pair, gorgeous centering, deep rich color at the darker end of the Steel Blue spectrum, each tied by red Type A "Supplementary Mail" handstamp on small blue piece with part of Jan. 16, 1862 transit datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE. A GORGEOUS PAIR OF THE 1861 24-CENT STEEL BLUE TIED ON A PIECE BY THE RED SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL CANCEL. TRULY PHENOMENAL IN EVERY RESPECT.

We are surprised this pair has remained intact, as the 24c Steel Blue shade is difficult to find with such choice centering.

Ex Drews. With 2019 P.F. certificate (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 24-CENT VIOLET ON THIN PAPER, CANCELLED IN VIVID RED AND GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.

The 24c 1861 exists in four basic shades of Violet: Dark Violet (August 1861 trial printing, formerly Scott 60); Violet on Thin Paper (August-September 1861 regular issue, Scott 70c -- the shade offered here); Pale Gray Violet (1861 regular issue, Scott 70d) and Blackish Violet (ca. 1863 printing, Scott 78c).

196   Image24c Pale Gray Violet, Thin Paper (70d). Near perfect centering with unusually wide margins, the delicate early shade on thin crisp paper, razor-sharp strike of large green 6-ring target cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXTRAORDINARY STAMP THAT COMBINES ONE OF THE RAREST 1861 SHADES WITH A TRUE GREEN CANCEL -- IN SUPERB FLAWLESS CONDITION.

The 24c Pale Gray Violet shade, Scott 70d, comes from an early 1861 printing on thin paper, a characteristic shared by the Violet and Steel Blue stamps. Scott 70d's rarity has been more widely recognized in recent years. This stamp, cancelled by a large 6-ring target in deep green ink, is incalculably rare. While we must always allow for the possibility of another example, it requires great imagination to envision another superbly-centered 24c Pale Gray Violet in sound condition, cancelled in green. This is not an offering likely to duplicated.

With 1988 and 2014 P.F. certificates. Scott Retail $3,650.00 (Image)
