VERY FINE APPEARING ONE-CENT 1851 TYPE IIIa FROM PLATE 4. ONE OF THE FEW EXAMPLES FROM THIS PLATE SHOWING A PORTION OF THE IMPRINT, AND ALSO THE MOST COMPLETE PORTION OF THE IMPRINT IN ANY SINGLE STAMP WE HAVE OFFERED.
The Neinken book states Stamps from Plate 4 showing part of the imprint are very rare.” A Power Search review reveals that we have offered a handful of unused and used Plate 4 singles with part of the imprint (both Scott 8 and 8A), but these stamps have invariably been cut from the sheet with a portion of the imprint trimmed away in the vertical direction.
This stamp, with a wide sheet margin, shows the largest portion of the imprint possible on a single stamp and is matched in our sale records only by the on-cover example offered in lot 70.

VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR ONE-CENT 1851 TYPE IIIa FROM PLATE 4, WITH A LARGE AND UNTRIMMED PORTION OF THE IMPRINT, TIED ON COVER BY A RED NEW YORK CITY CARRIER DEPARTMENT DATESTAMP. ALONG WITH THE OFF-COVER SINGLE OFFERED IN THIS SALE, THIS IS THE MOST COMPLETE PORTION OF THE PLATE 4 IMPRINT IN ANY SINGLE STAMP WE HAVE OFFERED.
This stamp, along with the single offered in lot 69, shows the largest portion of the imprint possible on a single stamp. This is also the only cover we have offered with a Plate 4 imprint, though there is reportedly one more in existence.

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE COMBINATION PAIR OF THE 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT COMBINING TYPES Ic AND III. THE LEFT STAMP -- THE RARE TYPE Ic -- IS A SUPERB GEM AND EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.
Type Ic occurs on only ten of the 200 positions from Plate 4 and does not occur on any other plate. Two of these ten are swing positions” (41R4 and 49R4), which can be Type IIIa stamps, depending on the impression. As is well known, most stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued with perforations. Imperforate stamps from Plate 4 are much rarer.

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND IMPORTANT PLATE 4 MULTIPLE FOR THE ONE-CENT 1851-57 ISSUE SPECIALIST.
The top stamp in this strip is the rare top-row Type II from Plate 4, showing complete ornaments at top. This is the only plate where this occurs and is essentially the equivalent of the extremely rare Type Ia from the bottom row of Plate 4, but the top-row Type II positions are not given a major listing in Scott. This strip was found by us in an old-time collection, and this offering is the second time it has made an appearance at auction.
Scott Retail as Type II Plate 4 top-row single and Plate 4 Type IIIa vertical pair. The Type II/IIIa combination is listed but unpriced (Image)

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A STUNNING STRIP OF THREE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II FROM THE TOP ROW OF PLATE 4.
Imperforate 1c 1851 multiples from the top row of Plate 4 are extremely rare--probably just as rare as the bottom-row multiples (Type Ia, Scott 6). This strip not only contains three of the desirable Type II complete design” positions, it also has one of the break in bottom line” positions (3L4), which most specialists consider to be Type IIIa (Scott footnote illogically states Regardless of the strength or weakness of the design at bottom, all stamps originating from the top row of Plate 4 are classified as Type II”).
Ex Neinken and Wagshal. With 2010 P.F. certificate (Image)
