The recipient, Franklin Buchanan, was a 45-year career officer in the United States Navy before joining the Confederacy in 1861. He became the only full admiral in the Confederate Navy during the Civil War and he also commanded the ironclad C.S.S. Virginia (U.S.S. Merrimac) during the beginning stages of the famous battle at Hampton Roads, Virginia. He was wounded in the early stages of the battle and was replaced as commander of the Virginia by Catesby ap Roger Jones prior to its engagement with the U.S.S. Monitor. He was a member of the Baltimore Buchanan family, which of course also included his cousin James Buchanan, the postmaster responsible for the Baltimore Provisionals.

9   ImageBrattleboro, Vermont, 5c Black on Buff (5X1). Position 6, large margins to clear including left sheet margin, crisp impression, cancelled by both red numeral 5” and matching PAID” handstamps, also with unusual plate flaw just to the left of signature, vertical crease, tiny tear at right

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE BRATTLEBORO POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL. ONLY 33 COPIES ARE RECORDED OFF COVER. THIS EXAMPLE IS ESPECIALLY NOTEWORTHY DUE TO THE PRINTING FLAW AND ALSO THE PAID” AND 5” RED CANCELLATIONS. A GREAT RARITY.

A total of 53 Brattleboro provisional stamps are recorded in the USPCS census (33 off cover including one on piece and 20 on 19 covers). Of these, many are faulty due to the softness of the paper. No other example of Position 6 shows the odd black spot of printing ink to the left of the initials, so this flaw must have either developed late in the life of the plate (if, in fact, it is a depression in the engraved plate) or it was the result of foreign matter adhering to the plate.

FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE RARE MILLBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL. ONLY EIGHTEEN ARE RECORDED, INCLUDING NINE USED ON PIECE OR OFF COVER.

The 5c stamp issued by Millbury postmaster Asa Holman is one of two United States provisionals with a portrait (George Washington in both cases). It is also unusual in that the designation Post Office” appears without any town name, a characteristic in common with the Baltimore and Boscawen provisionals. Our census of the Millbury provisional is available at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/7X1 .

Census no. 7X1-CAN-06. Ex Dr. Maffeo and Alan”. With 1957, 1992 and 2007 P.F. certificates.
