Two, Positions 28 and 38, full margins, rich color, tied by light "Marion Ala." circular datestamp on yellow cover to Ridgeway N.C. with James Buchanan three-quarter portrait in oval from the campaign of 1856, John Andrew imprint (Milgram JB-1), right stamp with small stain and left stamp with faint corner crease

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE USE OF THE ANTEBELLUM JAMES BUCHANAN CAMPAIGN ENVELOPE IN THE CONFEDERATE MAILS DURING THE CIVIL WAR.

This type of Buchanan campaign envelope was manufactured during the Presidential Campaign of 1856, in which Buchanan was elected over John C. Fremont and former President Millard Fillmore. In this instance, it was used by a resident of Marion, Alabama, during the war. Because Buchanan was popular in the South for his political views, this might also be regarded as a patriotic use.

Dec. 2" circular datestamp on cover to Stockbridge Ga. with John Bell Three-Quarter Portrait with Flags, Eagle and Shield Campaign design, Raynor imprint, Edward Everett for V.P. crossed out in pen, cover with some edgewear and clipped corner at top left, Very Fine appearance, a rare John Bell 1860 Campaign cover used within the Confederate postal system--Bell was a prominent politician from Tennessee who ran for president in 1860 as the candidate for the Constitutional Union Party (a third party which took a neutral stance on the issue of slavery), although he was opposed to secession during the antebellum period, following the Battle of Fort Sumter he dramatically reversed his position and supported the Confederate cause; his vice president running mate, Edward Everett, was a loyal Union man, which explains why his name was crossed out (Image)
