The Clovis Collection of Confederate States Illustrated Covers continued...

Postmasters’ Provisionals continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
112 c ImageMacon Ga., 5c Black on Yellow Wove (53X3). Huge margins including top sheet margin, tied by "Macon Ga. Jun. 29" (1861) double-circle datestamp on cover to Mrs. Howell Cobb, Athens Ga., some insignificant cover staining at bottom

EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE MACON 5-CENT FLORAL BORDER POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON COVER.

All of the Macon provisional stamps were printed from typeset forms. The 2c and two of the three 5c settings simply state the denomination and nothing else, and they were the first stamps printed. These were followed by the four-line "square" stamp, which includes the words "Post Office" and "Macon, Ga." The order of issue is confused by the Scott Catalogue listings.

Ex MacBride and Kilbourne. With 1999 C.S.A. certificate. Scott Retail $6,000.00 (Image)

113 c ImageMemphis Tenn., 5c Red (56X2). Ample margins on two sides, touching at top and right where slightly irregular, tied by "Memphis Ten." circular datestamp on buff cover to Paris Tenn. with "John W. Chrisp & Co. Dealers in Slaves, Memphis Tenn." advertising corner card, slightly reduced at right

FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARY USE OF THE MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A SLAVE DEALER'S ADVERTISING COVER.

Printed corner cards and advertising envelopes rarely mentioned the slave trade, although the institution was obviously an integral part of the Southern culture and economy. Examples of slave trade corner cards are very scarce, and this example with the Memphis Postmaster's Provisional is incalculably rare.

The John W. Chrisp & Co. firm is identified in the advertisement as "Successors to Forrest, Jones & Co." The Forrest is Nathan Bedford Forrest, the Confederate general and founder of the Ku Klux Klan.

116 c ImageMemphis Tenn., 5c Red (56X2). Huge margins including portions of adjoining stamps at top and left, just clear at right, small repair at bottom left barely touches the design, tied by "Memphis Ten. Jul. 31, 1861" circular datestamp on red and blue Jefferson Davis Medallion, 11-Star Flags, Sunburst and Verse Patriotic cover (JD-1C, Verse 53) to Miss., Jul. 28, 1861 docketing on back, small mend at top left of cover and missing part of backflap

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A RED AND BLUE JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER.

The Memphis 5c provisional is known on Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotic covers in single-color Blue, Black and dual-color Red and Blue. All are rare and we believe the Red and Blue is the most visually striking.

117 c ImageMemphis Tenn., 5c Red (56X2). Positions 29/37, vertical pair, full margins to slightly in at bottom, tied by partly clear strike of "Memphis Ten. Aug.? 8" (1861) circular datestamp on 7-Star Confederate Flag overall Patriotic cover (F7-2B) to Raleigh N.C., Saunders, Clark & Jones imprint, some edgewear and erosion at top left corner, barely reduced at left

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE USE OF A PAIR OF THE 5-CENT MEMPHIS PROVISIONAL ON A COVER WITH A CONFEDERATE 7-STAR FLAG OVERALL PATRIOTIC DESIGN.

The F7-2B design contains a prominent flagstaff, in contrast to F7-2A which lacks the flagstaff. As an overall design covering the entire envelope it is visually striking, and it's use with the Memphis Postmaster's provisional is very rare.

(Oct?) 31, 1861" circular datestamp on red and blue 12-Star Confederate Flag with Tassels and Verse Patriotic cover (F12-4, Verse 54), significant misregistration of the blue color makes each star appear double, addressed to Osceola Ark., stamp with light crease, cover slightly reduced at left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A COLORFUL PATRIOTIC COVER.

This 12-Star design is the same as F8-12, but with stars added to the four corners.
