Position 3, ample to large margins with two full framelines, bottom right corner slightly clipped, without usual pen cancellation, tied by "Baltimore Md. Feb. 16" (1847) circular datestamp with "5" in circle and two strikes of "PAID" handstamp on folded letter to New York City, additional strike of "PAID" handstamp at left, light vertical file fold thru stamp has been skillfully pressed and is not mentioned on accompanying certificate

EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLE USE WITH THE 5-CENT BALTIMORE PROVISIONAL TIED BY THE TOWN DATESTAMP, RATE MARKING AND "PAID" HANDSTAMP.

This is the only recorded Baltimore provisional cover with the stamp tied by three different handstamps. It is especially desirable with all three struck in blue.

Aug. 24" (1845) circular datestamp on cover to Miss Eugenia McDonald in Washington D.C., stamp with some slight gum toning, small bit of ink erosion in address at bottom edge, cover edges slightly refolded

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL COVER BEARING THE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, 5-CENT ON BLUISH PAPER. EXAMPLES WITHOUT PEN CANCELLATION AND TIED BY A HANDSTAMP ARE VERY RARE AND THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST.

The Baltimore provisional stamps were printed first on bluish and then on white paper (the Scott catalogue reverses the chronological order). Examples of the 5c on Bluish (3X3) on cover are rarely tied solely by a handstamp cancellation. The Scott value for 3X3 on cover is inexplicably $1,500.00 lower than the value for 3X1 (White paper)..

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COVER AND VERY EARLY USE OF THE 5-CENT NEW YORK POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL WITH "RHM" SIGNATURE.

Shortly after the first day of issue, Postmaster Robert H. Morris decided to begin initialing the provisional stamps. July 17, 1845, is the earliest recorded date of use for a New York Postmaster Provisional with validating initials (see Piller book, p. 61). This cover is dated one day later. The "RHM" initialed stamp is extremely rare on cover. Because of the New Hamburgh find, it is as rare or even rarer used from New York City than used to New York City. Wall recorded only six "RHM" covers used from New York in his Chronicle series.

Position 2, with major double transfer, large nicely balanced margins, without usual pen cancellation, tied by perfect strike of red square grid cancel in its earliest state, matching "New-York 10cts. Aug. 10" (1847) integral-rate circular datestamp and "Paid" in arc on envelope to Rome N.Y., there was originally a second stamp to the left which is no longer present

VERY FINE. DESPITE THE MISSING STAMP, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT NEW YORK POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL "BIG SHIFT" DOUBLE TRANSFER ON BLUE WOVE USED AFTER THE FIRST FEDERAL STAMPS WERE ISSUED IN JULY 1847.

According to the USPCS census, there are two covers with the 9X2 (Blue paper) used after the July 1, 1847, release date of the 1847 Issue. In addition to the two 9X2 covers, there are several others with 9X1/9X1a stamps dated after the first federal stamps were issued, but some of those might be misdated in docketing notes or have year dates that have been misread. This and the other 9X2 cover have stamps cancelled by the red square grid used by the New York City post office.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE STAMP AND COVER. RARELY SEEN TIED SOLELY BY THE RED CIRCULAR DATESTAMP AND WITHOUT A PEN CANCEL. A BEAUTIFUL ST. LOUIS "BEARS" PROVISIONAL COVER FROM THE FAMOUS CHARNLEY & WHELEN CORRESPONDENCE.

The St. Louis "Bears" were issued by Postmaster John M. Wimer from November 1845 until the first United States General Issue became available in July 1847. The stamps were issued in three denominations -- 5c and 10c at first and a 20c denomination later -- and were sold at a premium over face value to pay the cost of printing. This November 29, 1845, cover is an early use (EDU is November 13).
