VERY FINE. AN IMPRESSIVE AND RARE MULTIPLE OF THE 1885 2-1/2-PENCE I.R. OFFICIAL, PARTICULARLY SO IN NEVER-HINGED CONDITION.

Despite the modest catalogue value, sound unused examples are quite challenging, not to mention a multiple. Wiseman specifically comments examples are "really difficult to find in fine condition".

EXTREMELY FINE GEM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-SHILLING QUEEN VICTORIA I.R. OFFICIAL WITH RAISED PERIOD. A RARE AND POPULAR VARIETY.

The Raised Stop variety occurred on the top row of each pane. The variety was never corrected and is therefore known on all the Queen Victoria and King Edward VII Shilling denominations. According to records listed in Wiseman, only 181 sheets were printed with the variety occurring 16 times in a sheet of 240. Considering natural attrition from use and the already scarce availability of unused Officials, it is unlikely that more than a small handful of examples with this variety are available to collectors today.

Lettered C-B, original gum, exceptionally large and well-balanced margins, beautiful shade on bright paper, additional dot after "Official" which is left unmentioned on the accompanying certificate or any reference material we have encountered though remarkably identical in color, shape and impression to those used on "I.R."

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SPECTACULAR EXAMPLE OF THE 10-SHILLING QUEEN VICTORIA I.R. OFFICIAL IN THE COBALT SHADE. A MAJOR DEPARTAMENTAL OFFICIAL RARITY WITH VERY FEW EXAMPLES KNOWN TO EXIST.

Wiseman's theory that this shade resulted from chemical treatment of the paper is conjectural. Without adequate studies, it is still debatable whether this shade is a chemical changeling or the result of different pigments used in printing. Specialists agree that this shade differs from Ultramarine and is truly rare. The natural attrition, contemporaneous use and the difficulty in acquiring unused Official stamps left very few examples for collectors.

VERY FINE. A FABULOUSLY CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER ONE-POUND I.R. OFFICIAL ON WATERMARK ORBS PAPER. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE APPROXIMATELY DOZEN EXAMPLES EXPERTIZED.

A little known fact about the underlying £1 on Watermark Orbs paper stamp is that this issue was printed in error. Wiseman explains in detail that on Nov. 5, 1887, a Warrant was issued calling for the stamps to be printed. The word "Orbs" was accidentally written instead of "Crowns". The error was noticed well before the supply was exhausted, but the Orbs stock was issued nonetheless. There is no reason to believe the I.R. Official overprint was done to "use up" the supply of these errors.

While some effort was made to prevent unused Official stamps from reaching the general public at the time of issue, there was little stock control, as these stamps were often used by tax collectors rather than Inland Revenue employees. As discussed in Wiseman, enterprising clerks sold examples to the stamp trade, despite official efforts to discourage the practice. By 1896, well after the regular issue and use of the £1 Watermarked Orbs, Official stamps were eventually made available to the public, but their availability was not widely publicized nor were they offered in every post office. These circumstances and the high value of a sterling pound contributed to the rarity of this stamp.

Owing to the long size of this stamp, examples invariably have faults such as creases and bends. Many unused examples have also been regummed. Examples free of faults with original gum are great rarities.
