Lot Sym. Lot Description
1162 c Image12c Black (17). Large margins to just slightly in, used with two 10c Green, Ty. III (15), one with large margins all around, other large margins except in at right, originally a horizontal pair, tied by red segmented cork cancels with matching "New Bedford Mass. Paid Feb. 18" (ca 1857-58) circular datestamp on cover to Paita, Peru, large red "12" credit handstamp

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING 1851-55 ISSUE COVER TO PERU WITH THE STAMPS CANCELLED IN RED AT NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.

This cover is addressed to Capt. William H. Almy of the whaling bark Cape Horn Pigeon. The 22c rate paid the 10c rate by American Packet and the 12c rate by British Packet from Panama. Capt. William Howland Almy was the son of George and Phebe (Howland) Almy and husband of Almira (Brownell) Almy. He and his son, George H., were lost on a whaling voyage around Cape Horn in 1860, when their vessel was struck by a whale.

Ex Kramer. With 1999 P.F. certificate (Image)

1163 c Image3c Ultramarine (114). Used with strip of four 30c Orange (71) and 10c Green (96), tied by quartered cork cancels, "Holmes Hole Mass. Aug. 19" (1869) circular datestamp on 3c Pink on Buff entire (U59) to the Ship Niger at Tumbes, Peru (on the northwest coast), red crayon "96" cents credit for quadruple rate, Panama transit datestamp (Aug. 30), manuscript "40c" (centavos) due, "Paita" in circle of dots transit backstamp, 10c with small tear, left 30c and 3c perfs affected from placement at edge, small cover repair where reduced at bottom right with "ru" of "Peru" written in pencil, otherwise Fine and very colorful, an extremely rare destination and franking with stamps from three different issues, paying quadruple 34c rate to Peru by American and British Packets, the "Paita" handstamp is also very rare on covers from the United States (Image)

1164 c Image12c Green (117). Deep rich color and sharp proof-like impression, choice centering, used with two horizontal pairs and two singles of 15c Black, F Grill (98), tied by circular cork cancels and light strikes of "Portchester N.Y. Nov. 10" circular datestamp on 1869 cover to Lima, Peru, blue "3" crayon and also red "72" crayon credit crossed out, second 15c from right is a replacement for missing stamp, 12c and three 15c stamps with small faults, flap reattached, Very Fine appearance, a beautiful and rare franking -- the story of the Portsmouth Find was first told by Elliott Coutler in the 1982 Register and summarized by Michael Laurence in his book on the 10c; probably the most plausible explanation is that two workmen found the cache of covers in a building that was about to be demolished, and they split them equally -- the use of a single 12c stamp with six 15c stamps is exceedingly rare (only two others are known to us), with 2011 P.F. certificate (Image)

1165 c Image12c Green (117). Strip of five, pair and single, tied or cancelled by corks, double-struck "Portchester N.Y. Feb. 18" (1870) circular datestamp on cover to Lima, Peru, from the Davis correspondence, red crayon "3" and "36", it does appear to be franked for triple 34c rate but the total would be $1.02 so 6c in postage is apparently missing, Lima arrival backstamp of Mar. 9, receipt docketing of Mar. 10, stamps lifted and replaced, Very Fine, despite the apparent missing stamps this is still a spectacular franking and one of the largest known frankings of the 12c Adriatic, ex Walske, with 2003 P.F. certificate noting the missing 6c in postage (Image)

1168 c Image30c Gray Black (165). Used with 1c Ultramarine (156) and pair of 10c Brown (161), 30c with very slight gum toning, tied by "New-York Mar. 31" (1877) duplex datestamps on folded letter to Lima, Peru, red "New York Mar. 31" circular datestamp, sender's directive "Str. Acapulco via Panama" in error as this was a discontinued route, sent by American Packet and then British Packet via Colon, red crayon "36/3" credit, back of cover with pair and single of Peru, 1874, 10c Orange, Postage Due (J3) stamps cancelled by Lima double-circle datestamps

VERY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE TRIPLE-RATE COMBINATION WITH THE PERU POSTAGE DUE STAMPS -- DEPICTING THE S.S. ADRIATIC. PARTICULARLY DESIRABLE AS A FOLDED LETTER WITH ALL THE STAMPS EASILY DISPLAYED.

The iconic James Smillie engraving of the Adriatic was the basis for the design of the 12c 1869 Issue as well as these 1874 Peru Postage Dues, which were also printed by National Bank Note Company. They also used the design on several bank notes and stock certificates of the period. This cover is particularly desirable as it is a folded letter and the top flap can be unfolded to display all the stamps on an album or exhibit page. Most others with the Peru Postage Dues are envelopes (usually with defective stamps from opening) and must be sliced open to achieve this.
