Beautifully clear strike of negative double-line oval handstamp with "May" inserted at bottom and manuscript "12" (May 12, 1815) in blank center of oval, "30" War of 1812 surcharge rate (20 cents for 300-500 miles plus 50% surcharge) on folded letter to Burlington Vt., War of 1812 content including discussion of pay for officers and enlisted men, Extremely Fine, this oval handstamp originally had a negative eagle and shield design in the center (one recorded example, ex Frajola and Hahn, see Siegel Sale 1125, lot 438), only a few examples of the modified version are known (three according to Calvet Hahn, this the earliest known use), during the War of 1812 Sackets Harbor was the center of American naval and military activity for the upper St. Lawrence Valley and Lake Ontario, with 2010 P.F. certificate (Image)
