VERY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL.
This is one of the most difficult grilled issues to obtain with decent centering. As further evidence of this stamp's rarity, the P.S.E. Population Report lists only five original gum stamps in any grade, including graded 10 (two), 20, 30 and 50.

VERY GOOD APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL. PERHAPS THREE ARE KNOWN, AND ALL HAVE SIMILAR CENTERING.
Only a small quantity of 2c sheets were grilled during the period when the Z device was active -- after the D Grill (Scott 84), the Z is the rarest of Black Jack grilled stamps. We were only able to locate two other unused blocks. One was offered in our 2014 Curtis sale (also ex Allen and Metzger), which had traces of original gum. Another was offered in our Sale 1037. The block offered in our 1970 Rarities sale has likely been broken, since the bottom stamps were sound. (Image)
FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THREE KNOWN USED BLOCKS OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL.
Ex Sinkler. This is the only used block we have offered in over 25 years. Scott Retail $10,000.00 (Image)
FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT Z GRILL.
The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed thru the Z Grill, which accounts for the rarity of surviving examples. The stamp offered here is far better centered than most and has only a faint crease.

FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS REPORTED TO BE THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT Z GRILL WITH PLATE NUMBER SELVAGE. A PHENOMENAL GRILLED ISSUE RARITY.
The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed through the Z Grill device. A block of four is known with a small part of the imprint at top, but the stamps have holes and thins, and one is repaired. For all 3c stamps (Scott 65, 88, 94 etc.) the full imprint and plate number are found only at the bottom of the sheet. The pair offered here, with the full plate number and a significant portion of the imprint, is a remarkable artifact.
With 1999 P.F. certificate. Durland lists this pair with a value of $100,000.00. Scott Retail as two singles with no premium for the imprint and plate number is $50,000.00 (Image)
AS FINE AS THIS EXTREMELY RARE STAMP EXISTS IN BLOCK FORM. ONE OF SIX KNOWN 3-CENT Z GRILL UNUSED BLOCKS.
The deep shade and very thin paper of this block are atypical of many 3c Z Grill stamps (including essays), but match at least two other unused blocks (ex Caspary). 3c sheets were first put through the Z Grill device in January (EDU 1/29/68), then migrated to the D Grill device about one week later (EDU 2/1/68). The 3c Z and D Grill stamps from this period are printed in a pale Rose shade on medium-thick paper, which did not take the grill very well. If our timeline is correct, the Z Grill was still functioning as late as March 17, 1868, and it is possible that some 3c sheets printed in a different shade on thinner paper were run through the Z Grill just before its conversion to the F Grill. Based on quantities delivered to the Stamp Agent and the time period of E Grill production, 3c sheets must have dominated the grilling devices in the February and March 1868.
We located six blocks in a survey of past auction sales and using Power Search for our sales. The block offered here is arguably the finest.
Ex Klein and acquired by Mr. Drews in our 1998 Zoellner sale, where it realized one-third of its then-current Scott Retail value of $34,000.00. With 1975 P.F. certificate (Image)
