70 P Image3c Rose, Large Die Proof on India, Manuscript "Specimen" Overprint (65SP1). Die sunk on 115 x 136mm card with full die sinkage, matching light impressions of die no. 441 and imprint at bottom, "Specimen" written in fancy script diagonally across design, India is also tied to card by "National Bank Note Co. N.Y." embossed seal, some minor toning specks around edges of card

VERY FINE. ONLY ONE SET OF THESE "SPECIMEN" DIE PROOFS WAS PRODUCED FOR THE 1861 ISSUE. THIS 3-CENT PROOF IS THEREFORE UNIQUE.

A similar set of die proofs is known for the 1870 National Bank Note Co. Issue. That set is also unique.

Complete set of ten values, 2c Die 1, approximately 42 x 50mm India paper mounted on approximately 100 x 140mm cards, the "SPECIMEN" ovpts. in vermilion (1c, 2c, 12c, 15c, 90c) or black (3c, 5c, 10c, 24c, 30c), each with "Specimen Postage Stamp from the National Bank Note Company No. 1 Wall Street New York" at bottom of card, these imprints in several different colors, bright and fresh throughout

VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR COMPLETE SET OF 1861 ISSUE LARGE DIE PROOFS WITH "SPECIMEN" OVERPRINTS AND NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY IMPRINTS.

These proofs originate from a salesman's sample book. Each is rare and this is the only complete set located with Power Search. Scott Retail as normal proofs (which are more common) more than $9,000.00, counting 2c as Die 2 (Image)
