EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE PRISONER'S COVER FROM SALISBURY, WHICH AT THIS LATE DATE WAS ONE OF THE MOST OVERCROWDED AND POORLY MAINTAINED PRISONER CAMPS IN THE SOUTH. THIS COVER IS OFFERED TO THE PHILATELIC MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME.

In the edition of the North Carolina Postal Historian with articles on Salisbury prison (Vol. 19, No. 3, Fall 2000), Galen Harrison reports that Charles Thompson was a civilian from Connecticut who was captured when "the mail boat out of occupied Norfolk fell into Confederate hands [and with two others] had been retained as hostages for the safety of Confederate citizens held in Union prisons." This cover and the others offered in the following lots come from correspondence held by the family for generations. (Image)

Charles Thompson was a civilian from Connecticut who was captured when the mail boat out of occupied Norfolk fell into Confederate hands, he was held at Salisbury and Castle Thunder prisons in 1863-64, the covers offered in lots 624-627 were sent by Thompson from prison, this balance comprises various covers and paper ephemera including five unsealed covers with Old Point Comfort Va. double-circle datestamps (Sep., Oct. and Feb.) addressed to Mrs. Charles Thompson in South Windham Conn., one with 3c Rose (65) and "A Prisoners Letter By Flag of Truce" endorsement, other four that were undoubtedly inner prisoner's covers but not endorsed so (three with No. 65 and one "Due 6"), two others with flag-of-truce endorsements and No. 65 in very poor condition (one with pencil on back "Recd. in Washington Dec 24/63 by me from a released prisoner of State, Henry B. Todd, Capt. & Provost Marshal" -- unusual use of the term "prisoner of state"), other items include an embossed and printed memorial card for Co. Elmer E. Ellsworth, the Union Zouave who was shot and killed on May 24, 1861, some post-war covers with Postage Due stamps, faults to be expected in an original correspondence of this kind, overall Fine-Very Fine (Image)
