Nov. 19" circular datestamp on cover to Oaks N.C., Fine strike on an Extremely Fine cover, this handstamp is known on unused envelopes, indicating provisional use and is believed to represent symbols of the Odd Fellow's Masonic order, it is scarce as a handstamped "Paid" and is very rare used as a cancellation on stamps (Image)

Regiment, Doles' Brigade, Rhodes' Division, Army of Northern Virginia, back with pencil notation and signature "Pass bearer over river with this letter not to go beyond opposite bank, G.P. Doles Brig Genl," edgewear and nicks, otherwise Fine, George P. Doles was a Georgia Confederate General who played a key role on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg in driving back the Union 11th Corps, he was killed by a Union sharpshooter at the Battle of Cold Harbor on June 2, 1864, just a few months after this cover was carried (Image)
