224° c ImageAthens Ga., 5c Red (5X2). Type II recut, large even margins all around, beautiful rich color and fine impression, lightly tied by grid cancel, "Athens Ga. Paid Mar. 31" (1862) circular datestamp on fresh white envelope (Washington D.C. stationer's embossing on back) to Mrs. Howell Cobb, in care of Col. John B. Lamar, Macon Ga., stamp slightly roughened at upper right corner, lifted to apply tiny reinforcement in margin, corner of envelope neatly mended (prior to Caspary sale and noted in that auction description)

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE SEVEN RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE RARE ATHENS 5-CENT RED PROVISIONAL STAMP.

Our census contains one half-cover and seven genuine covers with the 5c Red (a suspect ninth cover has since been certified as having the stamp added). This count accords with the Crown census. All genuine examples are dated in March or April 1862. In addition, we record fewer than six off-cover examples of the 5c Red. Based on margins and overall condition, this cover ranks among the three or four finest.

Pencil note on back "May 6, 1896" (prior sale date). Ex Caspary, Kilbourne and Gross (Image)

227 E ImageCharleston S.C., 2c Brown, 10c Blue Green, Essays on Wove (Dietz E-11, E-12). Large even margins, fresh colors, 2c similar to design used for the entires and issued stamp, 10c also similar but with Palmetto tree at center as on the 1862 10c provisional entire, both with trivial thin spots

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE PAIR OF THE 2-CENT AND 10-CENT CHARLESTON S.C. PROVISIONAL ESSAYS.

Little is known about these designs, except that they are printed on the same paper as the issued 5c stamps. The Calhoun book notes it seems likely the postmaster originally considered the idea of 2c, 5c and 10c stamps and that the 2c and 10c may have been discarded due to the cost of printing.

Ex Krieger and Felton. With 1988 P.F. certificates (Image)

228 c ImageCharleston S.C., 5c Blue (16X1). Huge margins including left sheet margin and two outer framelines, other sides clear, tied by "Charleston S.C. Sep. 24, 1861" double-circle datestamp on buff J.N. Robson commission merchant's corner card cover to Concord N.C., minor edge flaws expertly restored

VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT CHARLESTON PROVISIONAL ADHESIVE ON AN ADVERTISING COVER.

The Calhoun census lists approximately fourteen examples on corner card covers. However, many are embossed and do not clearly show the design. The example offered here, with sheet margin and clear corner card, is especially desirable.

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE CHARLESTON S.C. 5-CENT BLUE ON BLUE PROVISIONAL ENVELOPE. ONLY TWELVE COMPLETE ENVELOPES ARE RECORDED.

The census published by Richard L. Calhoun (Confederate Philatelist, Jan.-Feb. 1989) lists twelve Blue on Blue envelopes, including one front only. Another envelope was offered in the sale of the James E. Hughes collection (Schuyler Rumsey, Apr. 22, 2010, lot 1393), bringing the total of complete Blue on Blue envelopes to twelve. The total number of provisional envelopes on any kind of paper is approximately 70.
