United States Stamps and Hawaii continued...

1864-86 Royal Portraits Issues, cont. (Scott 39-52C)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1203 c ImageHAWAII, 1882-83, 2c Dull Red, 5c Ultramarine (39, 43a). 2c horizontal strip of five with natural s.e. at right, all stamps tied by four strikes of purple "Late Letter Mail" double-circle, additional bold strike at lower left on cover to Esquimalt, British Columbia,, purple "Forwarded by/J. M. Oat, Jr. & Co./Stationers & News Dealers/Honolulu, H.I." four-line backstamp, "Honolulu H.I. Oct. 1" (1884) circular datestamp also ties stamps, San Francisco and Esquimalt receiving backstamp

EXTREMELY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL USE FROM HAWAII TO BRITISH COLUMBIA. A STUNNING COVER.

The "Late Letter Mail" handstamp was used to indicate payment of the extra fee for a letter that was brought to the Honolulu Post Office after the posted closing time for a mail shipment -- similar to U.S. Supplementary Mail. Gregory lists date range of use from Jul. 2, 1882, to Oct. 1, 1884 (this the latest recorded example). This cover, with a strip of five of No. 43a and a single No. 39 is the most visually stunning example we have encountered.

Ex Bilden. With 2001 P.F. certificate (Image)
