HAWAII, 1864, 1c Black, Laid (23). Plate 8-A, Type II (Westerberg Position 1), close margins but framelines complete, bold 9-bar square grid cancel, small pinhole in "OS", pen mark on back, Fine appearance, rare, the 1996 Pietsch sale catalogue (Shreve) reports "less than ten known" of Scott 23 in used condition, presumably based on Albert Chang's records, ex Honolulu Advertiser and Twigg-Smith, with 2003 H.P.S. and 2007 P.F. certificates (Image)

Plate 8-A, Type IX (Westerberg Position 10), Seventh State of the plate showing complete "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE." at left shifted up, as well as partially printed "A" in "ISLAND", unused (no gum), large margins, small thin spot at top left, toning on back, Very Fine appearance, the type at left, "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE.", is known in seven stages or states on this plate, this is the Seventh State (final), showing the full printing at left but shifted up in comparison to the First State, ex Drucker, with 1979 H.P.S. and 2017 P.F. certificates (Image)
