VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT SHIELD BOOKLET PANE FROM POSITION B, SHOWING THE ROUND BALL MARKER NEXT TO THE GUIDE ARROW.

The distinct Ball Marker variety was caused by ink collecting in indentations from a Brinnell mechanical device used to measure plate hardness. This is an extremely rare variety and occurs on less than two-tenths of one percent of sheet plate proofs for this booklet pane. It is found only on limited plates in Position B. (Image)

Horizontal pair showing Double Gash on Washington's face in right stamp, margins all around, Very Fine and rare variety, the Single and Double Gash on Face varieties are reported to originate from Position 16 of the lower left pane of plate 4671, depending on how the plate was wiped the damage can appear as a single or as a double, this is the discovery example and one of two recorded by Mr. Brody for the imperforate issue, listed but unpriced in Scott (Image)
