Classic Bureau Issues featuring the Dr. Irvin Heimburger and Roger Brody Collections continued...

1902-08 Issue: Essays, Proofs, Specimens
Lot Sym. Lot Description
104 E Image2c 1902-03 Issue, Preliminary Pencil Drawing of Frame as Adopted on Tracing Paper (301-E1B). 145 x 168mm design size on slightly larger tracing paper, signed "R. Ostrander Smith 1-9-0-2", frame is essentially as adopted for the final stamp design, small flaws and corner creasing due to the fragile nature of the paper

THIS IS THE UNIQUE HAND-DRAWN FRAME ESSAY OF THE ADOPTED DESIGN BY R. OSTRANDER SMITH FOR THE TWO-CENT 1902 ISSUE. A WONDERFUL RARITY.

There are a few other frame sketches known for the 2c 1902 Flags Issue, but they differ significantly from the final design. This is the preliminary sketch of what would become the actual adopted frame design.

Ostrander Smith", mounted on exhibit pages with descriptions throughout, some faint paper toning

VERY FINE. A FASCINATING GROUP OF PENCIL DRAWINGS OF THE 1902 ISSUE, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CREATED BY RAYMOND OSTRANDER SMITH.

This set was the subject of a series of articles in the U.S. Specialist in 2003 by Roger Brody (nos. 881-883, copies included). While there has been considerable debate about the origin of the drawings and whether Smith was in fact responsible for their creation, they form an outstanding set and are perfect for display (Image)

112 P Image1c-$5.00 1902-03 Issue, Panama-Pacific Small Die Proofs (300P2a-313P2a). Rich colors throughout with only the 50c slightly oxidized, a few with the typical minor mounting translucencies, characteristic light toning

VERY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE COMPLETE SET OF 1915 PANAMA-PACIFIC SMALL DIE PROOFS FOR THE 1902 ISSUE. ONLY THREE TO FIVE EXAMPLES OF EACH WERE CREATED.

From February 20 to December 4, 1915, the Panama-Pacific Exposition was held in San Francisco, to commemorate Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean and to celebrate the opening of one of mankind's greatest engineering achievements, the Panama Canal.

The Post Office Department decided to prepare a limited number of proof sets showing every United States stamp printed up to the time of the exposition. A total of 413 different designs were made. Only two sets were officially prepared, but it is widely recognized that between three and five of each were made. These included Officials, Newspapers and Periodicals, Philippines and other special use stamps.

The Shreves catalog of the first Brody collection in 2002 stated that only this complete set of 1902 Issue Panama-Pacific proofs exists in private hands. However, we believe there is at least one additional complete set in private hands. A master set of all 413 proofs resides in the Smithsonian collection.
