THIS IS THE UNIQUE HAND-DRAWN FRAME ESSAY OF THE ADOPTED DESIGN BY R. OSTRANDER SMITH FOR THE TWO-CENT 1902 ISSUE. A WONDERFUL RARITY.
There are a few other frame sketches known for the 2c 1902 Flags Issue, but they differ significantly from the final design. This is the preliminary sketch of what would become the actual adopted frame design.

VERY FINE. A FASCINATING GROUP OF PENCIL DRAWINGS OF THE 1902 ISSUE, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CREATED BY RAYMOND OSTRANDER SMITH.
This set was the subject of a series of articles in the U.S. Specialist in 2003 by Roger Brody (nos. 881-883, copies included). While there has been considerable debate about the origin of the drawings and whether Smith was in fact responsible for their creation, they form an outstanding set and are perfect for display (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS COMPLETE SET OF 1902 ISSUE LARGE DIE PROOFS IS ONE OF ONLY THREE OR FOUR KNOWN. A GREAT RARITY OF EARLY BUREAU AND ESSAY-PROOF COLLECTING.
The Shreves catalog of the first Brody collection in 2002 stated that three complete sets of large die proofs are known, as well as one part set, which was divided up and offered individually in that sale. The $2.00 and $5.00 offered individually in this sale (lots 113-114) are from that part set. (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE. A SCARCE COMPLETE SET OF 1902 ISSUE SMALL DIE PROOFS FROM A ROOSEVELT PRESENTATION ALBUM.
VERY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE COMPLETE SET OF 1915 PANAMA-PACIFIC SMALL DIE PROOFS FOR THE 1902 ISSUE. ONLY THREE TO FIVE EXAMPLES OF EACH WERE CREATED.
From February 20 to December 4, 1915, the Panama-Pacific Exposition was held in San Francisco, to commemorate Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean and to celebrate the opening of one of mankind's greatest engineering achievements, the Panama Canal.
The Post Office Department decided to prepare a limited number of proof sets showing every United States stamp printed up to the time of the exposition. A total of 413 different designs were made. Only two sets were officially prepared, but it is widely recognized that between three and five of each were made. These included Officials, Newspapers and Periodicals, Philippines and other special use stamps.
The Shreves catalog of the first Brody collection in 2002 stated that only this complete set of 1902 Issue Panama-Pacific proofs exists in private hands. However, we believe there is at least one additional complete set in private hands. A master set of all 413 proofs resides in the Smithsonian collection.
