VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS ESSAY, WHICH WAS PRINTED BY THE CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY.
We are aware of one only other in Black, and one in the other known color, Green. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY 3-CENT COMPOSITE ESSAY WITH SCROLLED ORNAMENTATION.
There are two types of the 3c Continental essay. One has a different style of foliate frame (Scott 147-E4 in the finished state) and the other has scrolled ornamentation, as in the example offered here. Both are known in black and green; we are aware of only this example in green for the second state and one in black. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE IN ANY COLOR WE HAVE OFFERED THAT SHOWS THE FULL DIE SINKAGE AREA.
We have offered perhaps a half-dozen unduplicated examples in all five Scott-listed colors since keeping computerized records. This is the only one with card showing the full die sinkage area, and only the second in Scarlet that we have ever offered. (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY 6-CENT ESSAY COMMEMORATING THE MONROE DOCTRINE.
The Monroe Doctrine figured prominently in the Grant administration, when these essays were made. Grant attempted to annex the Dominican Republic in 1869 to protect it from foreign influence and invasion, but the measure was defeated in the Senate. (Image)
