1869 Issue, Safety Paper Underprint Essays continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
4145° E Image10c Brown, Die Essay on Orange Safety Paper, Type 20 Underprint (116-E7a). 32 x 56mm, full vertical size with top and bottom margins and showing two National Bank Note Co. N.Y. imprints and die no. 3493, rich color, thinning at top and small hole below "U" outside of die

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A FASCINATING SAFETY PAPER ESSAY, SHOWING THE IMPRINT AND DIE NUMBER PRINTED IN THE COLOR OF THE SAFETY PAPER AND AN IMPRINT PRINTED IN THE COLOR OF THE STAMP DESIGN.

This is the only example of a Safety Paper essay we have encountered with the National Bank Note Co. imprint or die number.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE 22 UNDERPRINT, WHICH SPELLS OUT "TWO" ON A 5-CENT STAMP.

Underprint Types 21-25 each depict repeating numerals or a number spelled out. They are particularly rare -- two or fewer are recorded for all but Type 24.

4147° E Image10c Carmine, Die Essay on Scarlet Safety Paper, Ty. 24 Underprint (115-E9b). 30 x 30mm, rich colors, very unusual "(ct)" or burnishing at bottom right in underprinting

VERY FINE. A GORGEOUS EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT LINCOLN SAFETY PAPER ESSAY WITH 10” REPEATED IN THE BACKGROUND. WE HAVE IDENTIFIED TWO TYPES OF THIS UNDERPRINT, WHICH WARRANTS A NEW LISTING IN THE SCOTT CATALOGUE.

It has been assumed that each combination of safety paper and denomination/color is unique. Therefore, we were surprised to find a second example of this denomination and color with the same 10” underprinting offered in Siegel Sale 1048 (lot 170). However, after comparing the two, we identified a distinct difference in the underprint pattern. In the example offered here and two others we have sold in different colors, the arches above the 10” do not touch the row below them. In four other examples we have sold in the past, including the other 5c in this color, the bottoms of the arches touch the row below them. This difference is significant enough that the Scott Catalogue should create separate listings for the two Type 24 underprints.

4148° E Image5c Black, Die Essay on Black Safety Paper, Type 25 Underprint (115-E20). 28 x 29mm, intense shade, tiny nick and small thin spot at top left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE TYPE 25 UNDERPRINT WITH ANY OF THE 1869 DESIGNS. IN THIS ESSAY, THE 50” REPEATING PATTERN IS USED WITH THE 5-CENT DENOMINATION. THIS IS ALSO THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF A BLACK DESIGN PRINTED ON BLACK SAFETY PAPER, CREATING A VISUALLY STRIKING ESSAY.

Underprint Types 21-25 each depict repeating numerals or a number spelled out. They are particularly rare -- one or two are recorded for all but Type 24. One other 5c is known with the "50" underprint pattern (the stamp design is in Orange). It is not known in any other denomination.
