Horizontal pair, tied by blue "Vergennes Vt. 27 Jan." circular datestamp with second strike at left on 1852 or later demonetized use cover to Dundee, Canada East, "Ogdensburg N.Y. Jan. 28" exchange office circular datestamp, "U States" ribbon ties pair, "10" (cents due) in U.S. and "6d" in circle due in Canada for unpaid treaty rate cover, red Montreal transit backstamp, left stamp with heavy crease, overall soiling and toned spots, otherwise Fine, a very rare 1852 attempted use of the demonetized 5c 1847 Issue to pay the 10c treaty rate to Canada, which was not accepted for postage, also a rare 1847 Issue cover exchanged through Ogdensburg, with 2017 P.F. certificate stating "it is a genuine demonetized usage..." May 1" (1850) circular datestamp and matching "R" (Recorded) handstamp on light green folded letter to Philadelphia, manuscript "33" registry number, inside with printed Mechanics Bank of Baltimore letterhead, stamp is slightly oxidized, light file fold passes thru but does not crease the stamp, Very Fine appearance, the "R" marking was applied to precursor registered mail at Philadelphia, this smaller "R" replaced the large "R" in October, 1849, with 2003 P.F. certificate as No. 1b Orange Brown (Image)
