Slightly smudged circular datestamp, matching grid cancels 3c Red on Buff Star Die entire (U27) with eagle design handstamp on cover to Hunnewell Mo., manuscript "Via the overland mail" endorsement at bottom, 1861 receipt docketing on back, with original contents which state in part "The over land mail will stop running through this country on the 25th of the present month March 1861...The Texians have succeeded in taking all the forts and arms in Texas without any resistance on the part of the soldiers...", fresh and Very Fine, a rare and enigmatic use (at one time believed to be a packet boat handstamp), ex Meroni and Felton, with Weill backstamp and 1994 C.S.A. certificate which declines opinion on the eagle marking (Image) E. $ 750-1,000

1523 c ImageSalem Va. May 7 (1861) -- First Day of Virginia Confederate Statehood. Double-strike of circular datestamp on the day Virginia entered the Confederacy, one strike ties 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26) on buff cover to New Market Va. with fancy illustrated Roanoke College corner card, two enclosures dated Jan. 26 and May 7, 1861, the first informing the recipient of his election to the Philosophical Society of the College and the latter thanking the society and commenting "We are now in the midst of great political difficulties...I hope the providence of God may interpose, peace be restored and our literary institution soon commence their sessions again.", slightly reduced at right, still a Very Fine example of this scarce design and an outstanding use on the day of Virginia's admission to the Confederacy, accompanied by a 1948 letter from August Dietz Sr. (Image) E. $ 750-1,000

Mostly clear strike of blue handstamp cancels 3c Red on Buff Star Die entire (U27), undated but must be 1861, addressed to Carroll, Hoy & Co. in New Orleans, usual small filing holes for this correspondence, Very Fine and most unusual, we have encountered the General Quitman Confederate packet boat handstamp on several covers bearing New Orleans Postmaster's Provisionals, however, this is the only example we have encountered on a Confederate use of a U.S. postal entire (Image) E. $ 500-750

1528 c Image"Per Emma Bett", Vicksburg Miss. May 31 (1861) -- Last Day of U.S. Postage Rates. Double-circle datestamp, matching small grid cancels 3c Red on Buff Star Die entire (U27) to Carroll, Hoy & Co. in New Orleans, manuscript "To be mailed in Vicksburg" and "Per Emma Bett" sender's routing instructions for the Confederate mail packet boat by that name, usual light filing holes, Very Fine and unusual, carried on the Emma Bett (which was burned in 1863) and put into the mails in Vicksburg on the last day of U.S. rates in the Confederacy, ex Gallagher (Image) E. $ 400-500
