BRITISH COMMONWEALTH SOUTH AFRICA - Orange River C
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
825 E 10var image1868 1sh orange, horizontal bisect used as 6p, tied to 1868 cover by barred oval cancel, Cape of Good Hope 4p blue also tied at right, Colesberg backstamp, Somerset arrival on front, addressee's name excised. As per regulations, covers to the Cape had to have 6p in Free State and 4p in Cape postage. To accomplish this, the sender pinned a 1sh stamp at the top left corner of the envelope and had the cover carried to the postmaster at Phillipolis, who bisected the stamp and replaced the top half in the corner with the pin and canceled it after noting "1/2 Shilling/APJvdP" below, the Cape stamp was then affixed and canceled by a different barred oval, the cover arriving at Somerset East on June 3, 1868; a truly remarkable and unique cover, probably the greatest rarity of the Orange River Colony (originally described in 1956 by Douglas Roth in "The South African Philatelist" (article enclosed), accompanied by 1956 Philatelic Federation of Southern Africa and 1985 Royal Philatelic Society certificates, ex-Gilbert (SG 9var) (Cat No. 10var) (Image) (image 825a) (image 825b)

Taylor, Graham & Argus" at Port of Spain, bearing "Lady McLeod" (5c) blue with good to large margins nearly all round and neatly canceled with a pen cross "X"; address panel with a vertical fold professionally repaired internally and lacking side panels, otherwise attractive with the stamp in unusually fine condition with many of the known examples being torn or with other faults. Pemberton, Wilson & Co. handstamp on one flap and signed by L.F. Livingston, with 1982 Holcombe and 1992 Royal certificates (each commenting that the stamp has been lifted and replaced, the latter also commenting on the cover having been cleaned). A splendid sound and exceptionally fine example of the iconic Lady McLeod on cover, ex- Cox, Dibble, Mellor and Melat collections (also illustrated on page 10 of "The Private Ship Letter Stamps of the World" by Ringstrom and Tester). The steamship "Lady McLeod" plied between Port of Spain and San Fernando carrying passengers (Image) (image 839a) (image 839b)
