690 E   image1943-44 selection of 13 covers or cards, neatly written-up exhibition style on pages, with Chios (3), Crete (5), Lemnos (1) and Mytilene (4), civilian mail with Greek commemorative or regular issue stamps used mostly on back, with "Deutsche Zensur Chios" also censor seal, others include "Zensiert Feld Kommandatur" and "Kreizkommandatur Iraklion", "Gepruft Postzensur Mytilene" and "Logokrisia Mytilinis", "Deutsche Zensur Mytilene" markings, censor seal "Geoffnet Deutsche Zensur", some cover wear, but generally fine or better, incredibly rare (after 1941, Greece passed in control of the Axis forces. To the Italians were handed the largest part of the Greek mainland, the Ionian islands, most of the smaller islands of the Aegean Sea and the eastern part of Crete. To the Bulgarians was handed the northern region of Thrace. The Germans kept under their control the most strategically important areas: the city of Athens, the port of Piraeus, Central Macedonia, one prefecture of Thrace which bordered with neutral Turkey and the some islands of the Aegean (including western and central Crete, Melos, Lemnos, Lesvos and Chios). The Bulgarian occupation zone included the northeastern corner of the Greek mainland and the islands of Thasos and Samothrace, the present-day region of East Macedonia and Thrace, except for the Evros prefecture (at the Greek-Turkish border) which, because of its strategic value, was retained by the Germans, despite Bulgarian protests.
