148 ng 203 image1880 2c scarlet vermilion, unused without gum as issued, beautiful color, well centered for this difficult stamp, v.f., pencil signed W.H.C. Colson, with 1957 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates. Siegel Census records only 19 stamps available to collectors, five of which have small faults or short perforations (the 20th copy is in the Miller collection at The New York Public Library). The example offered in this sale has not been seen since 1957 and is number 203-UNC-18 in the census. It is certainly one of the best with respect to color and centering. A slightly off centered copy brought $40,000 in our David Mace sale (April 2018) cat. $100000 (Cat No. 203) (Image) (image 148a)

149 ng 204 image1880 5c deep blue, unused without gum as issued, well centered with wide margins on all sides, fresh color, v.f. One of the rarest Special Printings, with 1950 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates. Siegel Census records only 18 examples of this Special Printing, including one copy in the Miller collection at The New York Public Library. About one third have minor faults. This is No. 204-UNC-16 in the Census, not seen since 1950 and certainly among the finest recorded. Comparable copies have realized $190,000 (Wingate Collection, Siegel Auctions, 2018) and $170,000 (Hall Collection, Siegel Auctions, 2015) cat. $240000 (Cat No. 204) (Image) (image 149a)

1882 Special Printing
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
150 ng 205C image1882 5c gray brown, without gum as issued, deep rich color and proof-like impression, perfectly centered with wide margins, with 1957 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates, the latter graded "XF-S95". Only 18 examples have been recorded (Siegel Census 205C-UNC-17), this certainly ranking among the finest, if not the finest. This elusive Special Printing was the subject of an informative article by William E. Mooz in The Chronicle, February 1992. His research provides strong evidence that the stamps recognized as Scott 205C are a small part of the 2,463 sold as Special Printings through the Third Assistant Postmaster General's office, and that regular issues were used to fill the backlog of orders for the 5c Garfield, ex-Caspary (as block of four, this is a bottom right example) (SMQ $120,000) (Scott catalogue value for Graded XF-SUP95) cat. $100000 (Cat No. 205C) (Image) (image 150a)

LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
153 og 233a image1893 4c blue, error of color, h.r., centered to left, nice blue color, tiny natural inclusion, fine example of this rarity, with 1953 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates (the 4c Columbian color error was caused by the use of a wrong batch of ink, and spectrographic analysis has shown that the blue inks of the 4c error and 1c Columbian have the same components. Stamps from at least two panes reached collectors, and it is likely that many of the stamps have been lost to philately) cat. $17500 (Cat No. 233a) (Image) (image 153a)
