153 E AAMC TO1141 image1931 (21 June) Wiley Post & Harold Gatty Record Circumnavigation, cover with 2c canceled at Mineola, N.Y, Berlin cds (June 24) and Russian cachets, one dated June 29, signed by Post and Gatty (Their journey began on 23 June 1931 at Roosevelt Field in New York and followed a 15,000-mile course across Europe, Russia, and Siberia, due to the lack of suitable airfields nearer the equator. Post and Gatty crossed the Atlantic in a record time of 16 hours and 17 minutes and continued to Berlin, Moscow, and Khabarovsk, then crossed the Bering Sea, landing on the beach near Solomon, Alaska, then to Edmonton, Alberta, arriving finally back at Roosevelt Field after 8 days, 15 hours, and 51 minutes. 156 E AAMC TO1177 image1933 (1 June) Attempted Round the World Solo Flight by Jimmy Mattern, who attempted to circle the globe in record time. Leaving New York on 3rd June, he flew nonstop to Jomfruland, Norway. The next stop was Moscow, but he was lost near Anadyr, Siberia and no communication was received for two weeks. Jimmy was finally rescued by the famous Russian flyer Levanevsky and flew on his plane to Nome, Alaska. From there, Mattern secured another airplane and continued back to New York. He carried a few covers which have postmarks showing the history of the flight: New York (June 3), Jomfruland (June 4), Moscow (June 5), Khabarovsk (June 12), Krasnoyarsk (June 9), Amadyr (July 5), Edmonton (July 27), and on reverse Juneau (July 25) and Fairbanks (July 23), franked on both sides, with minor toning and cover wear and tear, signed Jimmy Mattern (Cat No. AAMC TO1177) (Image) (image 156a)
