This is a folded letter written from Middleton England 26 Feb 1844 & posted at Wirksworth 28 Feb rated "2", and addr to Rev. Smithhurst in care of the Church Missionary Society in London. The Society would have forwarded this cover with others to a Hudson's Bay Company supply ship to York Factory, James Bay then by HBC canoe brigade to Red River Settlement. Only certain individuals were entitled to send letters free of charge. The sender did not enjoy this privilege & the letter was rated "4/4" Stg (to collect) in m/s on the reverse.
