101 cover image1896 (Dec. 14), Japan 2s Postal Card used from Nanking to New York, via Shanghai, Yokohama and San Francisco, showing bilingual oval origin datestamp in violet, 14 Dec 1896, with "Shanghai/Local Post" transit c.d.s. in red, the indicia canceled by "Shanghai/I.J.P.O." c.d.s. (both 16.12); there was apparently a 1c Nanking Local Post stamp applied at lower—subsequently removed—that was tied by a San Francisco Paid All c.d.s.; New York receiver dated Jan 24 97, Very Fine,

The Nanking datestamp is rare when utilized as a Postage Paid marking; however, the Nanking Local Post stamps were issued in late Sept. 1896. The order of the date in the Nanking datestamp corresponds to the stamp era. The pre-adhesive marking reads month, day, year.
