1867 Grilled Issue
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
2006 ngbl 79 image1867, 3¢ rose, A. grill (Scott 79), block of 4, unused without gum, strong color, remarkably well centered for this extremely challenging issue, vast majority of perforations are full, especially for left pair; top left stamp with small thinning at top, Fine to Very Fine. Six unused blocks of 4 are known to exist. A review of Stamp Auction Network shows three of them, ex Klein and Zoellner, with 1998 P.F. certificate (obtained after the Zoellner sale), 1975 P.F. certificate no longer accompanies).
Scott $55,000.

An article by Philip H. Ward, Jr., published in Mekeel's 11/15/1948 reports "The new find, which was located in New York City, consisted of a block of twenty, five horizontal by four vertical… There is a right sheet margin with part of imprint on margin of upper stamp. Until this large block was located, possibly two and certainly not more than three blocks were known. Fortunately, the new block is very well centered and fresh, although is without gum. (It) has been broken into four blocks of four and four singles." Two of the blocks have selvage at the right, this block was broken from this block of 20 (see diagram). Scott Catalogue notes "Values for No. 79 are for Fine-Very Fine examples with minor perf faults. Examples with complete or virtually complete perforations sell for much more."
