1876 21-26 image1906-07, Fifth Series, Hamilton Bank Note Co. & 8th Series Maps, Specialized Collection Balance, Arranged in 34 stocksheets in a 3-ring binder; starts with some die essays and plate proofs of the original Panama stamps; the rest, separated by spacing, is loaded with varieties including five 1c double overprints (4 unused without gum, one used with a small tear), a 1c "ONE" in a used pair with normal), all four values with spaced "C A" (each in block of 4), an 8c with extra vertical perfs, many blocks of four or larger, 11 of them with imprints. Among the 8th Series Maps are a 13c with "10 cts." omitted (36b) overprinted SPECIMEN; a 10c (37) with shifted perfs (CZSG 37.1), and blocks of 4 of plate proofs on card of the two unoverprinted Panama stamps—which were never issued in Panama (printed in green rather than gray). 1880 117 image1934, 3¢ Goethals, Valuable Background Material (Scott 117), A marvelous holding of original material, the most interesting being 10 original pencil or ink drawings by designer, Meade Bolton, six of the portrait only and four of the stamp in various sizes, none of them as the accepted design. Also included are nine photographs of Goethals, a couple of them showing the original portrait upon which the stamp was based. Additionally, there is a Typed Letter Signed by Goethals, dated Nov 22, 1909, on Canal staionery in which he expresses regrets about a missed meeting in New York City; and a pen & ink drawing of a proposed design for a First Day cover cachet (presumably by Bolton). Finally, there is an, 11-page, handwritten article by Bolton dated April 15, 1951, in which he critiques the designs of the 1928 1¢ Gorgas and 2¢ Goethals stamps and gives the background of how his design of the 3¢ Goethals came about.
