3327 cover   imageLouisiana Relief Committee - Smuggled Mail, small cover franked with a 10¢ type II (Keatinge & Ball) tied by an incomplete Mobile, Ala. double-circle datestamp, addressed to "Ernest Landry, Beauregard La Battery, S C Siege Train, Charleston, S.C., Care of C.D. Bardot"; at Charleston the cover was redirected with penciled notation to "Capt. Bridger, Green Pond" S.C. and a three-margin 1861 10¢ Paterson (#2, faults) was added for forwarding postage and tied by a May 27 Charleston c.d.s.; docketed "9 May No. 63" (possibly indicating the 63rd letter sent by the L.R.C.); sealed opening tear to the left of the right-hand stamp, Fine and rare.

Research into the recipient's (Landry) family correspondence has proved that this cover was smuggled out of Union-occupied New Orleans by the mails there. The Louisiana Relief Committee was surreptitiously founded jointly by citizens of New Orleans and Mobile to affect secret transmittal of mail to and from New Orleans after the city's fall on April 25, 1862.

3331 cover 1863 imageOutstanding Confederate Letter 1863, reads in part, "I have just seen the latest news, from which the confirmation off Genl Lee's re-crossing the Potomac appears. Genuine satisfaction and relief were felt at Richmond in consequence. Whatever may be that leaders plan of campaign now remains to be seen, but this fact is now established at Richmond that he inflicted ??? blows upon the enemy in ??? upon his own foothold than ever in Virginia and more was accomplished for our cause in the enemy's country than the defensive in Va. ??? have accomplished in a much longer time. The battle of Gettysburg was a most signal defeat to the Yankee Army, and the country will soon acknowledge it. No one knows what was the object of the invasion. Genl. Lee well knows whether it has been accomplished. Lee future feats continue our judgement. At Port Hudson, the poor fellows could hold out no longer. Nearly starved, they actually eat the last mule in the Garrison before surrendering. Our soldiers may be starved into capitulation, but never whipped. We lost there 5,000 troops, 50 pieces of Artillery. No news from Charleston. I do hope Gen. B (Bragg?) has his eyes wide open. The enemy are at work - busy." with original cover franked by No. 12 tied by "Savannah Ga. Paid Jul. 18" circular datestamp, Very Fine. (Image) (Image2) (Image3)
