3318 cover   imageGroup of 8 Signed Union Naval Orders, many re blockade, five from 1862 including two Gideon Welles signed orders (written by another person) ordering the U.S. Bark to report for duty, first with the Bomb Flotilla at Ship Island Gulf under Commander David D. Porter (Feb. 10) and then to Pensacola Florida and report to Admiral Farragut (Nov. 26), two David D. Porter signed orders (written by another person) including one ordering the Steamer Octanora from Ship Island to Key West to provide provisions to the Flotilla and then to proceed to Mobile to look for and capture any craft trying to run the Blockade of Southern Coast (May 27), others signed Capt. William McKean, Flag officer - Commandg. Eastern Gulf Squadron", and the three 1864 include one transferring William Radford from the U.S.S. Iuka to take command of the U.S.S. Cactus signed by Gideon Welles, (Radford was in command of the U.S.S. Cumberland when it was sunk by the Merrimac), one signed by Rear Admiral Samuel P. Lee revoking Radford order to the West Gulf Squadron and rerouting him to Fortress Monroe to report to Lee, and one ordering Lt. Rogers to report to the Iuka also signed by Welles, orders are 8 x 10 with two horizontal file folds and are accompanied by brief typed descriptions, otherwise Fine to Very Fine, see one of these in the printed catalog and the others online. 3325 cover 73 imageCarroll Prison, Washington D.C., 2¢ black (73). tied by a Washington D.C. target duplex, Dec 27 1863, on a cover front addressed to James Roane at Carroll Prison, Washington D.C. and marked "Paid/Lyons"; notation at the top reads "The prisoner whose name is on the back of this letter has been released on taking the oath of allegiance. W.P.W. Supt. O.C.P. [Old Capitol Prison]"; pasted onto a folded sheet with docketing on the reverse which includes "1863, Washington Decr 28, Major Turner to (…) Lyons" and "Recd. Decr 29, James Roane B.S., Dfted by Confeds", Very Fine. Ex-Dr. Rorke, Faust. A rare use of a Black Jack on prisoner-of-war mail., with a 1978 P.F. certificate.


Carrol Prison and Old Capitol Prison were nearly adjacent at First & A (now East Capitol) Streets. After the war, Warren P. Wood, the Superintendent of Old Capitol Prison, would become the first Chief of the U.S. Secret Service.
