3289 cover 1863.1215 image1863 (Dec. 15), Mixed Franking Cover from Norwalk, CT, to Shanghai, China, the 45¢ franking paid by overlapping 2¢ Blackjacks (2), 5¢ Jefferson and 12¢ Washingtons (3) (#73, 75, 69), all cancelled by four strikes of bold crossroads fancies; Norwalk double-circle postmark at lower left above "Via Southampton" endorsement; red "1d" credit handstamp and Christmas Day London Paid datestamp on face, along with red "48" manuscript credit; reverse with partial New York Paid handstamp, blue Hong Kong C FE 25 64 transit and black Shanghae MR 3 64 receiver; "48" credit due to the New York office treating the cover as fully paid for the Marseille route, the British ignoring such and properly sending it via Southampton (confirmed by the transit time), Very Fine. Stubbs aboard the US Store Ship Relief, "Care American Consul/Macao/China", endorsed at bottom "Via Southampton England"; only 41¢ postage paid (of the proper 45¢ rate) by 3¢ Washington (#65) plus 19 single 2¢ Blackjacks (#73) on front and back—the sheer number of stamps apparently leading postal clerks to believe the full rate was paid; each stamp manuscript cancelled "M" with Milo postmark alongside; front bears all transit marks, comprising Boston Br. Pkt. Paid datestamps (2), red crayon "1" credit mark, London PAID datestamp (16 DE 65), and black Hong Kong "C" receiver (FE 7 66); cover with travel and edge wear, most stamps faulty to some degree (one 2¢ on back with pre-printing paper fold that has been opened), but still a stunning stamp-covered item, Fine to Very Fine, ex Mayer.
