1027 O/cover   imageThursday Island cancels study, 1887-89, comprising two covers and seven individual items on piece or off, all but one showing either Thursday Island "148" numeral cancel (allocated for use in the mid-1880s) or "Thursday Island/Queensland" postmark; the first cover is believed to be the earliest known "148" cover, franked #67 & 68, with August 1887 postmark below (day not struck up) and addressed to Chichester, England, a Sept. 24 1887 receiver on reverse; the second cover, to Scotland, franked #69 with Dec. 25 1889 Normanton postmark, bears a Thursday Island transit (DE 29) and Innerleithen (FE 10 90) receiver on reverse; stamps include four different values (including a 1s) with "148" cancels, two different postmarks (1888 and 1889), and a strip of three 6d with straightline "REGISTERED/THURSDAY ISLAND" handstamp; condition of stamps varies, but strikes are uniformly Very Fine, imaged in full online; a wonderful little holding.
