LotNo.: 57
Symbol:
CatNo.: 17a
12¢ black, diagonal bisect on cover to Peoria IL from San Francisco CA (Scott 17a), wonderfully sharp and clean top right half, large-margined, tied to cover accepted as postage on a transcontinental voyage to Peoria, Illinois by San
Francisco postmark; while the date is unclear, the envelope is docketed "San Francisco 1 Aug 1853/Recd 8 Sept."; remarkably sound cover with backflap intact, Very Fine, an attractive example of this five-month stopgap usage. Scott $2,500.
A shortage of 3¢ stamps at San Francisco led to the use of bisected 12¢ stamps to pay the 6¢ rate in May-September 1853. In September 1853, bisects were prohibited in the East, notice of which reached San Francisco in
October.
