"Imprimatur" isn't a word we philatelists use—or even come across—every day, but it's as old as the Penny Black itself. The term is Latin, it means "let it be printed" and refers to the first sheet of stamps printed from the approved and finished printing plate. This sheet is normally held by the printers (or in the case of the British, the Treasury) as a record. While the British Treasury would normally keep the entire sheet, on occasion individual stamps were removed, making them incredibly rare, valuable and sought after.
