783   imageIndia, 1929 (Nov. 4), Imperial Airways India - Great Britain FDC of India's First Airmail Set, each stamp a marginal single, cancelled Park Street, Calcutta, Nov. 4, with designer G. Grant's signature on each selvage piece; cachet of four-propeller biplane with "India - Great Britain/by Imperial Airways/Via: - Bagdad, Gaza, Alexandria,/Salonika, Budapest, Vienna, Cologne", and boxed "First Day/of Issue of/Air Mail Stamps" handstamp (repeated on reverse; red-white-blue "Avail Air Mails/and/Save Time" and blue-and-white "Air Mail" labels on front; reverse signed G. Grant and Stephen H. Smith (both dated 4 November), and J.D. Lingham (addressee in London, 21.11.29); snaking inch-long tear at left (through FDI handstamp), plus vertical crease and vertical fold not affecting stamps, still Very Fine overall, one of three covers known to exist.

784   imageIndia, 1930 (Mar. 9), Calcutta - San Francisco - Alameda First Flight, four covers, all sent from Van Lear Black to Stephen H. Smith, Secretary of the Indian Air Mail Society, that tell a story: the first is the actual First Flight Cover from Calcutta to Alameda, CA (Smith, p. 128), properly cancelled Calcutta, with 2¢ Washington cancelled Alameda May 12, two straightline "FIRST FLIGHT" and one two-line "Air Liner/Maryland Free State" handstamps, "Calcutta to San Francisco By Air" notation in red manuscript and signed "Scholte/pilot Maryland Free State" - one of 26 carried; second (ibid., Field 250) is from the Croydon - Calcutta - San Francisco - New York - Alameda flight of Mar. 9, inscribed by Mr. Van Lear Black "From a purely commercial plane that has just come from Croydon, England", registered and cancelled Calcutta 10 MAR 30 - 3 letters carried, but this is the only one known to exist; third (AAMC #TO1088, Field 250) posted Alameda May 9 addressed to Calcutta with violet straightline "Maryland Free State" handstamp, both envelope and enclosure on specially printed stationery showing blue and yellow plane for use on the flight - this is the only cover posted from Alameda on May 9; and the fourth an Aug. 2 letter from New York with enclosure on stationery reading "On board Sabalo", Mr. Black's yacht from which, on Aug. 18, he fell overboard and drowned, Very Fine, phenomenally rare covers and a great story to boot: perfect for the exhibitor.
