Los Angeles] 1930 (May 31), Curtiss Marine Trophy Race Flight, Anacostia, D.C., legal-size cover (a Lakehurst Naval Air Station penalty envelope) franked with a 5¢ Washington tied by Mar 31 Washington D.C. duplex; typed statement acknowledging landing at Anacostia in a glider launched from the Airship, signed by the glider pilot, Lt. T.G.W. Settle and by Lt. R.F. Tyler, Very Fine. The cover is addressed to stamp dealer Donald Dickason in Wooster Ohio. Dickason was the recipient of the 17 Netherlands "Thoolen" covers that survived the Hindenburg Disaster.

Thomas G.W. Settle was eventually transferred to sea duty and would reach the rank of Vice Admiral before retiring. Raymond F. Tyler would remain with lighter-than-air craft and would reach Captain and was commander of the Navy's Airship Wing One at the end of World War II.

248   image[U.S.S. Los Angeles] Hull fabric, three pieces described in the accompanying photocopy of a letter to collector Fred Hambrock, Jr. on N.A.S. Lakehurst letterhead dated Dec 30, 1929, and signed by H.M. Dietzman, Production Engineer: 1.) "a small piece of one of the two parachutes carried on the U.S.S. Shenandoah on her disastrous flight"; 2.) a "piece of printed fabric…the kind and quality of cotton cloth used for the outer cover of the U.S.S. Los Angeles" which "was made in England for the Zeppelin Company in Germany, the builders of the Los Angeles"; and 3.) a piece of aluminized fabric "representative of the kind of fabric now used on the Los Angeles and is fast replacing the fabric used by the Germans.".

Akron] 1932, Hull fabric, piece of "‘duralumin’ and outer covering fabric from the damaged fin of the ‘Akron’ mishap on February 22nd" attested to in a typed letter dated April 1, 1932, on U.S.S. Akron stationery and signed only "R" to a "Friend Fred" (prominent airmail collector, Fred Hambrock, Jr.) for his collection; the piece of tail fin has been identified as such by "R" in ballpoint pen, the covering fabric includes a rivet; sizes are approximately 4-5" x 1½-2".

At Lakehurst, on February 22, the
Akron suffered an embarrassing ground handling accident when, in front of a group of congressmen waiting to board the ship for a demonstration flight, the ship broke away from its handlers, striking its lower tail fin on the ground. Repairs took two months. (Image)

Akron] 1932, group of four, three are from the May Coast-to-Coast flight to San Diego (one franked with only 5¢ but not charged postage due); the fourth is purported to have been carried on Akron's return flight to the east coast by a crewman; it is postmarked San Diego, Jun 6 (the flight departed on Jun 11), and is handstamped "Via Air Mail" with a manuscript inscription, "Via ‘Akron’ 1st flight East", there are no other markings and the inscription has been re-inked; also included is a Roessler "Air Mail/ U.S.S. Akron" pictorial label in red orange., Fine to Very Fine.

Macon" handstamp postmarked Lakehurst, Oct 12; a second 3¢ stamp was added and canceled Sunnyvale, Calif., Oct 19, whence the cover was returned by ordinary mail to its addressee in Washington, D.C., Very Fine.

The
Macon flew from Lakehurst on October 12, arriving at Moffett Field in Sunnyvale on October 15, where she was stationed until her fatal crash in February of 1935. This was not an official mail-carrying flight, but the cover was apparently put or carried aboard by the sender, a Lt. Commander A.M. Bryan stationed at NAS Lakehurst. It is addressed to a B.J. Merritt at the Navy Dept. in Washington. (Image)

256   imageGreat Britain, [Airship R-34] 1919 (July 2-6), East Fortune, Scotland - Selmah, Nova Scotia, unfranked cover addressed to Warlingham, Surrey, England; postmarked Selmah, Nov 8 (one bag of mail was dropped over Selmah and was not found for more than four months); on reverse is Selmah Postmaster's handwritten statement, "This letter dropped by H.M. Airship R34 July 5th 1919 and picked up at Selmah, Hunts Co. N.S. Nov 8th/19 by Milton Weldon and forwarded to Halifax by C.S. Waugh. Postmaster"; the cover is handstamped "T/30" and "3d/F.B." for postage due; Fine and rare. The addressee was unknown in Warlington and the cover was finally returned to the Dead Letter Office in Ottawa on Jan 20, 1919.

This was the world's first transatlantic crossing by a lighter-than-air craft. Another mail bag was dropped over Grand Bank, Newfoundland, but was never found.
