This is an interesting anomaly of stamp production that some may argue produced one of the rarest U.S. stamps known. Unknown to the general public, this stamp was printed with rotary machines and perforated with perforation 11 on a flat plate perforating machine which was not designed to perforate rotary press stamps. This caused very poor centering of the issue due to the different sizes of the two plates. For months, this stamp floated around post offices until the variety was finally reported, making this stamp very rare
