7724   imageConfederate States, [Mecklenburg Co.] Boydton, clear Jun 23 (1861) c.d.s. on a locally addressed cover erroneously rated with a handstamped type B "PAID/10"; since the cover only required 2¢ postage as a drop letter, a "DUE" in arc was struck directly over the "PAID" and the "10" was crossed out and replaced with a handwritten "2¢"; and finally, just to be sure, the Postmaster added, in manuscript, "Due 2 cents, Drop"; the cover is addressed simply to Col. Wm. Townes Jr.; includes original letter concerning collection of a judgement; cover opened roughly at the right, otherwise Very Fine. A most interesting and unusual usage. (Image) (Image2) (Image3)
