Persia
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
7088 ()   imagePersia, 1901 (Aug.), Internal Registered entire front, sent Sultanabad to Hamadan, a 1Kr Coat-of-Arms entire uprated by five 1sh gray on green Lion-and-Sun issue (Scott #136; block of 4 plus single); red-on-white "R Perse/No" Registry label with straightline "Registered." handstamp below (the latter tying the 1sh single); addressed to the Revd. J.G. Watson at Hamadan, with double-oval "Agence Ziegler & Co." handstamp struck twice (inverted to one another); indicia and stamps tied by indistinct Sultanabad [present-day Arak] daters; violet straightline "AUG 24 1901" likely receiver; paper clip rust stain at lower left and horizontal fold through address panel of no consequence, Fine to Very Fine,

The Ziegler Agency, based in Sultanabad, was one of the leading popularizers and exporters of Persian carpets in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Interesting that this cover front is to an American missionary, whose work extended beyond proselytizing to fighting against the opium trade—one of Ziegler's earlier marketing ventures.
