9351   imageSouth Africa, "The Late Crisis in Johannesburg", private pictorial of the Australian Brigade on the back of Transvaal 1d postal card used to Germany with 11 April, 1896 postmark, Marklissa arrival datestamp, fresh and Extremely Fine; a series of border incidents began in 1895, arising from frictions between the British Colonists in the Cape and Natal and the "Boer Republics" of Transvaal and Orange Free State, the most notorious of these was the "Jameson Raid" of 1896, the leader of the raid (an attempted coup d'Etat) was Leander Starr Jameson (Administrator of Rhodesia and disciple of Cecil Rhodes), the raid failed and the leaders were tried in London receiving light sentances, further inflaming Boer sentiments.

9360   imageSouth Africa, Fieldpost to Boer Prisoner at Ladysmith, cover postmarked "Roodepoort / 8 Feb 00" sent to a captive of the British and backstamped Johannesburg the same day, as no exchanges of mail were made, it waited until the end of the siege, when it was picked up by the commander of the relief force of British Cavalry, note "S.A.R." in the address indicating that the Boers thought their occupation permanent and Ladysmith part of Transvaal, cover faulty as one would expect; accompanied by the original enclosure and note within which cover was enclosed stating "Letter picked up by J.F. Brown Murdock just outside Ladysmith, February, 1900; the only such item known in this period.
