Van Cortlandt was descended from early settlers of New York and served as Lieutenant Governor under George Clinton from 1777-95. He inherited the Van Cortlandt manor house and surrounding lands from his father in 1747. Apparently he was pressed for money when he penned the letter as he reminds Boardman that he "…must be sensible that altho the land is bound you are not in the least exonerated from payment of your bond…."
