4004 1916 M101-5 Sporting News #151 image1916 M101-5 Sporting News #151 Babe Ruth, Blank Back Rookie Card PSA 7 NM, Presented here is one of the most important and coveted cards in the entire hobby — the legendary 1916 M101-5 Sporting News #151 Babe Ruth Rookie Card, graded PSA NM 7 with Blank Back designation. Universally recognized as one of the premier rookie cards in all of sports collecting, this extraordinary prewar treasure captures Ruth during his earliest years with the Boston Red Sox, before he transformed baseball and became the most iconic athlete of the 20th century.

Issued during the infancy of Ruth's major league career, the M101-5 series predates his emergence as baseball's greatest power hitter and instead portrays him as the young Red Sox pitcher who would soon change the sport forever. The image of Ruth in his pitching follow-through remains one of the hobby's most historically significant and visually recognizable rookie-era depictions.

This remarkable PSA NM 7 example stands among the finest surviving copies of this iconic issue. The card displays exceptional eye appeal with sharp imagery, outstanding contrast, clean borders, strong centering, and remarkable overall preservation for a card produced more than a century ago. High-grade examples of the Ruth rookie are exceedingly scarce, and examples at this elite level are firmly entrenched among the most desirable investment pieces in the entire vintage card market.

The Blank Back variation carries an added layer of rarity and collector appeal, representing one of the scarcer back types within the M101-5 issue. Advanced collectors have long prized these early Ruth cards not only for their rarity, but for their unmatched historical significance as artifacts from the dawn of baseball's golden age.

Babe Ruth transcends sports collectibles. He remains the single most influential figure in baseball history — the player who revolutionized the game, captivated the nation, and helped establish baseball as America's pastime. His earliest cards occupy the absolute pinnacle of the hobby, with demand consistently driven by elite collectors, institutions, and long-term investors worldwide.

Population of 3; Encapsulated and authenticated by PSA Cert #08161848. An extraordinary museum-quality Babe Ruth rookie card and a once-in-a-generation centerpiece worthy of the most advanced collections in the world. (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

4005 1925 EXHIBITS image1925 EXHIBITS HENRY LOU GEHRIG Rookie Card PSA 5 EX, Presented here is the exceptionally rare 1925 Exhibits Henry L. Gehrig card, graded PSA EX 5—one of the earliest and most desirable Lou Gehrig cards ever issued. Produced during the formative years of Gehrig's legendary career with the New York Yankees, this scarce prewar Exhibits issue predates many of his more widely recognized mainstream cards and represents a true centerpiece for advanced vintage collectors.

Notably, the card features Gehrig under his original "Henry L. Gehrig" designation, adding an extra layer of historical significance to this already iconic issue. The striking black-and-white full-body image captures the future Hall of Famer in classic batting pose during the early stages of what would become one of baseball's most storied careers.

This PSA EX 5 example presents beautifully with strong contrast, clean image clarity, solid centering, and impressive overall eye appeal for a card produced a century ago. Exhibits cards were distributed differently from standard gum cards of the era, resulting in far lower survival rates in high grade and making quality examples increasingly difficult to obtain.

Lou Gehrig remains one of the most revered figures in sports history—a seven-time World Series champion, two-time MVP, and enduring symbol of excellence, humility, and perseverance. Early Gehrig cards continue to rank among the most sought-after prewar investments, especially scarce regional and Exhibits issues such as this example.

Population of 4; Encapsulated and authenticated by PSA Cert #04140530. A remarkable prewar rarity that represents both the dawn of Gehrig's Hall of Fame career and the golden age of vintage baseball collecting. (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
4016 1959 image1959 Alaska Statehood Gold Medal by Ralph J. Menconi, struck by Medallic Art Company. Gould-Bressett 105. 63mm. NGC MS 68. Edition #82 of 100., One of only 100 serialized examples struck in .900 fine gold by the prestigious Medallic Art Company of New York, this monumental 63mm medal ranks among the most significant gold commemoratives of the statehood era. Designed by acclaimed sculptor Ralph J. Menconi, it celebrates Alaska's official admission into the Union as the 49th State on January 3, 1959. Weighing approximately 218.1 grams with an Actual Gold Weight of approximately 6.30 troy ounces, the medal's substantial gold content made it a target during the 1979-80 bullion boom, and an unknown but likely significant portion of the original mintage did not survive. Survivors of any grade are genuinely scarce.

The obverse presents a topographically textured map of the contiguous 48 states with a geographically scaled map of Alaska dramatically superimposed, conveying the state's immense landmass at a glance. The inscription "49TH STATE" fills Alaska's interior; "ALASKA" arches above and "JANUARY 3, 1959" curves below. The MACO hallmark appears at lower left. The reverse reproduces the Great Seal of the State of Alaska in bold three-dimensional relief—a radiant sun cresting over glacier-capped mountains, a steamship and sailing vessel at sea, a train passing a smelter and mining works, dense evergreen forest, and a farmer with a horse-drawn plow in the foreground. A sea lion and fish flank the lower inner border. "THE SEAL OF THE STATE/OF ALASKA" surrounds the periphery. The edge is numbered 82 and inscribed "MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y. 900 FINE GOLD."
Shipping charges apply - weight 2 lbs.
Certified NGC MS 68 (Cert. No. 8472045-001), the surfaces display rich medium-gold tones with a faint pale rose undertone and fully intact fine-grain sandblast texture—a virtually flawless example of an important American gold medal rarity. (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (All Images)

He started his aerial career with kites and dirigibles but soon turned his attention to aeroplanes. He made the first flight in Britain on October 1, 1908, in a plane he designed and built himself. He appeared at Britain’s first air meet in Doncaster, October 15-23,1909 and was a regular participant in future meets.

Numerous other milestones are presented, some in greater depth than others, usually due to the dearth of available ephemera. Some highlights include:

Particular attention is paid to Claude Graham-White, a pivotal character in the expansion of air-mindedness, with his school, demonstration and appearances.

Graham-White’s failed attempts at a first mail flight during the Blackpool meet, July 28-August 20, 1910. The September 1911 Coronation flights were the first successful schedule mail trips. Both are present.

Aerial Tours around Britain sponsored by the Daily Mail. Benfield C. Hucks was of particular importance during this period. He probably flew more miles to more out-of-the-way places that anyone else. He created quite a stir and helped increase awareness of aviation throughout the country.

In 1913, the Sinclair Tobacco Co. sponsored a flight, made by Hucks, to carry parcels of their products to various places in the southeast, February 11-13, 1913.

4022 curtiss hydroplane imageCurtiss Hydroplane and Flying Boats Exhibit Collection, 1903-20, Housed in four 11" x 17" albums, a succinct story of Glenn H. Curtiss and his importance to US aviation. It traces the beginning of his interest, first in aeroplanes, the hydroaeroplanes and flying boats, the latter at the behest of the US Navy. Indeed, he is considered the father of US Naval Aviation. Volume I studies at his land planes while Volume II describes his work with water-based planes. There is some chronological overlap but each type is kept separate to avoid confusion.

The Wright Brothers are credited with the first motorized flight in 1903, though there is some debate about that. It does, however, remain an important milestone in aviation. One would have expected them to be the most important innovators during that early period, but that was not the case. They became embroiled in patent disputes, particularly with Curtiss (which they eventually lost), turning their attention away from improving their designs. They were well-known in Europe, much less so here because of their concern that their ideas would be "borrowed."

Into that void stepped Glenn H. Curtiss of Hammondsport, N.Y. Like many early aeroplane makers who came to the field via other means of transportation, usually bicycles or dirigibles, Curtiss was a mechanical genius who, with no formal training but merely "Yankee ingenuity", improved bicycle designs, joining his father F.R. Curtiss's business which dealt in harnesses and all manner of horse furnishing goods, including wagons.

He became a championship bicycle racer and, enamored of speed, decided to add a motor to his cycle as others had done. On January 7, 1907, on Ormond Beach in Florida, he set the world speed record of 141.5 mph—which stood until an automobile bested it in 1911.

Dirigibles, cousins to balloons, were quite popular, often seen at state and county fairs. Their main difficulty was the inability to steer. Cpt. Thomas S. Baldwin, one of the foremost dirigible fliers in the country, learned of Curtiss's new, relatively light-weight engines and, working together, they created the first steerable dirigible. Curtiss had never thought much about air travel until he went up with Baldwin. His love of speed led him to think about and work on a heavier-than-air machine.

He, along with Alexander Graham Bell and others, formed the Aerial Experiment Association, in existence from October 1,1907 to March 31, 1909. In quick succession, between March and June 1908, several prototypes were made by AEA, the first three with Curtiss designs: the "Red Wing," the "White Wing" and the "June Bug," each an improvement on its predecessor. The latter won the Scientific American trophy as the first aeroplane to stay aloft for more than 1 km. He won it three years in a row to become its permanent recipient.

AEA's fourth plane was the "Silver Dart" designed and flown by J.A.D. McCurdy. This design morphed into what is called Curtiss No. 1, the "Golden Flier," that won the first Gordon Bennett Cup at the first International Air Race at Reims, France on August 28, 1909, edging out Louis Bleriot. As a result, Curtiss's fame became world-wide. The following year, May 28, 1910, Curtiss became the first to fly the length of the Hudson River, further cementing his reputation.

Volume III concerns his various training schools, aviation supply companies carrying Curtiss planes and parts and exhibition companies, both his and others.

Volume IV is an in-depth look at his 1909 Reims and 1910 Hudson River flights.

The story continues from that point through his development of land and sea planes for both pleasure and military purposes. His famous JN-4 was the backbone of military aviation training and key to the development of commercial aviation.

The entire holding comprises well over 450 items, amongst which are photos, postcards, covers, advertising pieces, Curtiss family personal memorabilia, poster stamps, race itineraries and other souvenirs, a Hudson-Fulton pass, cinderella stamps on and off cover (with varieties), four original C.L. Forthier pen-and-ink drawings of assorted biplanes, etc., etc.

Additional material in three-ring binders include extensive ephemera surrounding the JN-4 with specifications and plans, company catalogues and operating manuals, letters—many signed by Curtiss, and more.

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain a lifetime collection, neatly arranged with much annotated. Fully imaged online, ex Groten.
