RO 16.12.1881; PO 1.4.1916; closed 28.2.1923; The "R.O.K" signifies 'Receiving Office Keeper'; the item was not registered but apparently this Sydney cds was the nearest to hand when it was processed. 493 c image1843 lengthy cross-written letter from England headed "Cottlesbrook Rectory Monday March 6th 43" to "Post Office/Sydney" carried to NSW per favor & placed into the mail on arrival with 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/AU7/1843/SYDNEY' b/s & rated "3" for an inwards shipletter, redirected within the town, minor splits along the folds. Carried on the 'Euphrates' ex Portsmouth 25.3.1843; arrived Sydney 5.8.1843. [Edward Irby came from a British military family. By the early 1840s he was resident at Tenterfield, near the Queensland border. In -.10.1844, one of Irby's shepherds was killed by aborigines. Irby's men pursued the culprits &, as reported at the time, threw them off Bluff Rock to their death]
