The stamp paid the up to 1lb parcel rate within the State (up to 1929 there were no distance-scaled rates; the only distinction was between intra-state & inter-state destinations). Despite the faults, this is an important & remarkable survivor containing a memorial plaque for a fallen WWI serviceman.

332 cO image1930 (circa) large parcel-piece (190x240mm) endorsed "FRAGILE/WITH CARE", to Caulfield (Melbourne suburb) with Kangaroos 9d & 1/- tied by part-strike of the huge undated 'PARCEL OFFICE/MELBOURNE/...' cancel with 'Parcels Office/ELIZ ST MELB' R-label, also with black/white 'PARCELS POST' label (Edition '1/1928') & rare usage of black/rose 'FRAGILE/100 per cent extra postage paid/...', a bit knocked-about with a few cosmetic repairs but an extraordinary item that is lucky to have survived. A marvellous item for the rates enthusiast. [Richard Breckon states that the rate for a Scale 1 (within 30 miles = 50km) parcel was 9d up to 2 pounds + 3d registration = 1/- + the extra 9d for the fragile service = 1/9d. This is the first such on-cover usage of the Fragile label that we have seen]
