872 og image1940 Ball Bay Prepared for Use but Unissued Perf 11 6d chocolate & 1/- grey-green, well centred, lightly mounted. Rare: the 1d 2d & 3d were also prepared. [Stephen Bradford's & Denbeigh Garrard's unmounted sets sold at our auctions of 9.11.2002 and 6.8.2011 for $7840 & $8155 respectively] The die was engraved by Frank Manley in 1938. The five values were approved in 1939 and printed in 1940 but the issue was delayed because some genius realised that the separate Norfolk Island postal administration had not been properly established. There were further delays & the issue was eventually cancelled, presumably because of the continuation of World War II.

875 = imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1930 (circa) largely very fine strike of 'IVY HOUSE/NORFOLK ISLAND' double-oval undated cachet tying KGV 1½d red Die II x2 to a small piece. Ivy House was one of the largest boarding houses on the island. The use of the cachet on stamps raises the intriguing possibility that a temporary Post Office operated there during the Garden Party Fete held there to promote the 1930 Horticultural Show.

876 c imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1942 (Nov 7) commercial cover to "State Lottery/NSW" with KGVI 2½d tied by largely fine 'NORFOLK ISLAND/AUST' cds, censored on the island with rare 'Opened by Censor' red/white label (narrow oval 'O's; Little type L2; ERD) tied by 'Passed by/Censor 3[?]/NORFOLK ISLAND' boxed h/s in violet (the numeral faint; Little type H2), a couple of minor blemishes. John Little states that both the labels & handstamps are "all scarce". In fact, the labels are much scarcer than the h/s: John's covers with #L-2 & L-3 labels sold at our auction of 5.3.2011 for $1093 & $1150 respectively.
