[In 1901, the Eastern Extension, Australasia & China Telegraph Co extended its submarine cable across the Indian Ocean via Rodrigues & Cocos. JT Stavers commenced his duties on the Cocos from 23.12.1908]

856 oversize cover imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1957 oversized OHMS cover (268x190mm) with 'Official Representative/Cocos (Keeling) Is.' handstamp in violet at lower-left, airmail to Victoria with Australia Aboriginal Art 2/- Crocodile solo tied by 'COCOS ISLAND' cds, a couple of relatively minor blemishes. Australian domestic rates applied: 4d for the first 1oz plus 2½d for each additional 1oz plus 3d airmail surcharge per ½oz. The item was correctly paid 4d + 2½d x2 + 3d x5 = 2/- for an article weighing up to 2½oz.
