Recorded 1912-15 only. The illustration in PMI is incomplete; this strike confirms the base inscription as 'WESTN ...'. PO 16.3.1908; RO 20.5.1909; PO 11.11.1912; RO 1918; closed 1928. 810 long cover image1884 (Aug 14) cover-front to Perth with extremely rare franking of '½' in Red on Perf 12½ 1d SG 90 very fine block of 4 tied by Bunbury duplex, central vertical fold. Ex Brian Pope. The block of 4 of itself is a rarity.  In addition, this and a very similar item in another Perth collection, are believed to be the only recorded usages of the Surcharge on cover.

811 c image1891 (Feb) cover with oval 'BROADHURST MACNEIL & CO/GUANO/CONTRACTORS/HOUTMAN'S ABROLHOS WA' cachet in violet on the flap, to Holland by hand to 'GERALDTON' (cds at L/R) with ½d & 2d grey tied by 'GT'-in-Bars cancels, Perth transit & 'ROTTERDAM/28/MRT/91' arrival b/s, some soiling mostly on the reverse. An extraordinary origin from a short-lived mining operation on little-known islands. Ex Brian Pope. [The islands, some 50km W of Geraldton, were discovered by Dutch sea captain Frederick de Houtman in 1619. 'Abrolhos' is a Portuguese word for 'thorn', a reference to the dangerous nature of these low-lying islands & reefs. In 1884, Charles Broadhurst was granted a lease to mine phosphate. Over the next 12 years 48,000 tonnes were extracted]

812 long cover image1894 (Jan 19) long commercial cover to Ireland with Four-Colour franking of ½d 2½d & 5d + Postal Fiscals 1d x5 (one creased before being affixed) and multiple strikes of the 'F'-in-Bars cancel of 'FREMANTLE/=W.A.=' (cds at the base) unusually with both the old '[crown]/REGISTERED' handstamp & the modern 'R'-in-cogwheel h/s and endorsed "AR" in red, London transit of 18FE94 on the face & octagonal 'REGISTERED/ DUBLIN/FE19/94' arrival b/s, vertical crease clear of the stamps & minor soiling. An impressive article. The rate was 2½d per ounce x4 + 3d registration = 1/1d. Note that the Avis de Reception fee of 2½d was affixed to a special form that was attached to the cover & removed at destination. Ex Brian Pope.
